The Clan of the Poes (Page 176)

//Panel 1//
Bystander 1:
An accident!
Bystander 2:
It’s awful!
Edgar’s Narration:
Farewell
Farewell
Bystander 3:
What a mess. Traveling this blind curve downhill at such a speed!
//Panel 2//
Bystander 1:
One person fell beneath the carriage. I saw it!
Bystander 2:
Liar! No one’s there.
Move that out of the way.
Edgar’s Narration:
Farewell, ties to my distant past…
//Panel 5//
Edgar:
Huh…
//Panel 6//
Edgar:
Ha ha.

Edgar's last line in Panel 2 translates literally as "Farewell my far-off/distant days/past." However, this doesn't have much meaning in English (or Japanese). It makes more sense interpreted as "TIES to my distant past," meaning that Marybel, Sheila and Baron were the only ones who had any connection to Edgar in the days before he became a vampire.

In the last two panels, Edgar appears to be laughing, but is really reacting in sheer stress and shock to the absurdity of the situation...all the efforts he has made up until now have been for nothing.
